my teacher always tells use never to dry our ballet shoes especially canvas ones. the soles on the bottom will often become hard and stiff. if you want to find different ways to wash your shoes either ask your teacher or go to google and search how too. this is one place to try: http://www.ehow.com/how_2222432_clean-soft-ballet-slippers.html
References :
i am a dancer and teacher...

Put them on a gentle spin in the washing machine or even try hand cleaning them in a bowl with baking soda as you said. TO dry them stick em in the airing cupboard, the tumble dryer or on the washing line. It doesn't matter if you put newspaper in them. OR if you have the money, take them to b dry cleaned.
References :
I used to soak mine for half an hour in a sink full of warm (not hot) water, with a teaspoon of baking soda added to it.
This was only if they got really dirty, which they usually did - I used practice on my garden patio :S
If they're not that bad, you can put them inside an old pillow case and wash them in the machine on a 60 degree wash. Then put them in the dryer (still inside the pillow case) with balled up newspaper mainly in the toe part to keep their shape.

Good luck with your recital :)

I always find with canvas shoes you can just stick 'em in the washing machine. Put them in a pillow slip if you'd like to be extra careful.
