80’s Commercials Vol. 29

June 20th, 2009 John Landon 25 Responses

These commercials aired during the 1984 Olympics on ABC on August 12th, 1984. These are from a 24 year old beta tape that my Aunt and Uncle recorded, so the quality isn’t the best.

1. McDonald’s (An EPIC one minute ad, featuring that great 80’s jingle)
2. Dean Witter (With Paul Gleason)
3. General Motors (Their feeble robots couldn’t hold up to the brutal efficiency of the Japanese variety)
4. Gatorade (I love the pixelated bodies)
5. Symphony Software by Lotus (A word processing suite for DOS)
6. ARCO (Before the Exxon Valdez, obviously)
7. GMC Vans and Trucks
8. Xerox (With Edward Herrmann)
9. Levi’s 501 Jeans
10. Ortega Taco Shells (With Cornthenticity! I love how he says “Ortega”!)
11. Sears (They mixed up CD’s and Laserdiscs, LOL)
12. Promo for “Call To Glory” (With Craig T. Nelson)
13. Mervyns (I wish I had an older brother like that kid to show me the moves)
14. Western Appliance (Electronics have always been expensive)
15. Aetna Insurance
16. M&M’s (Look how huge that bag is!)
17. Converse
18. Promo for “Family Feud Celebrity Special”, “Loving” and “Family Feud”
19. ABC News Promo (Uniquely qualified to bring you the world)

Duration : 0:10:6

All I know is that …
All I know is that McDonald’s stopped using styrofoam because it’s not biodegradable. But does anyone remember the Mc BLT with the styrofoam? Lettuce and Tomato and bun on one side kept fresh n cold and the other side kept warm with the bun and beef patty and cheese?

    Remember now… …
Remember now… Nobody new what a CD was back then. (Unless, you were talking ‘investment opportunity’!) I think that’s why he phrased it, “I heard SONGS on a LAZERDISC… Like it was a novelty. (Like when I first heard you could take a ‘picture’ with your ‘phone’!)
Of course, we didn’t have cell-phones either! We had CAR-phones, and they were literally installed into your dash! And only the rich family in the neighborhood had one!
(God! I sound like my gramp pa!)

    I think that GM …
I think that GM should pull that commercial back out air it again.

I wish that McDonald’s would bring back those Styrofoam containers.

    In terms of your …
In terms of your basic fries and hamburgers, both would probably be about the same. They generally had smaller portions back then though.

    Would MacDonalds …
Would MacDonalds then be more or less healthy than it is now?

    Cars in the 80’s …
Cars in the 80’s look like they had alot more room. Unfortunately today, new cars barely have any room. That’s one thing my dad always complained about.

    it’s weird that the …
it’s weird that the Levi’s commercial seems like it’s from the ’90s and the Mervyn’s commercial is like one from the ’70s lol

    i think the quality …
i think the quality of these commercials is almost perfect. beta was great. thanks for uploading.

  9. LOAblue

    The GM commercial …
The GM commercial is ironic… says in the begining “the future is “on line”, and talks about computer technology a bit later; but don’t think they were reffering to anything like the internet

    - Cornthenticity?
    - …

    - Cornthenticity?
    - At least this 501 commercial was better than the one of that guy just jumping around.
    - Wasn’t this around the time Gung Ho was made?
    - the M&M’s bag is pretty f’in big.
    - I never was the biggest Converse fan.

    This Levi’s 501 …
This Levi’s 501 commercial was better than the on of the guy jumping rope in an empty attic.

    They could get away …
They could get away with re airing some of those commercials again today. They wasn’t kidding when they said nobody sweats the details like GM.

Now where can I get that 2300 dollar deal on a big screen TV again? I’ll take the VCR to.

  14. EKS511

    Cornthenticity!

    Cornthenticity!
Inventing your own word shows creativity and vision. Visitivity! :)

I literally laughed out loud when I saw those people in formal wear getting out of that GMC van.

    The next time the …
The next time the late great Paul Gleason had to go in there, he was cracking Dean Witter’s skulls!

  19. picorna1977

    these commercials …
these commercials are so fun to watch. i’m 31 and i remember quite a few of them…

however: $2395 for a bloody television?!?

yeah…..it might have been state of the art in 1984, but that’s one piece of technology i would have learned to live without :-)

    but thanks for the memories

    it’s really sad to …
it’s really sad to see the commercials of today while watching these…my boyfriend and i actually make youtube nights now instead of watching tv…everything lacks spirit, enjoyment…maybe things weren’t perfect 20 years ago when i was a kid, but at least you were left with a feeling of hope and laughter…now all toys are digital, no one wants a stuffed puppy unless it runs around and every adult has verizon strapped to their head…
